The hidden wolf princess

#Chapter 1

My body trembled as I rose from the bed, weakened by the weight of my own existence. It had been a day spent in a desolate prison, unable to find the strength to leave my sanctuary.

"I beg of you, don't leave me," I pleaded desperately, tears streaming down my face. "I can't navigate this world without you, Mariah. I will perish."

Regrettably, she responded with a feeble tone, "I'm afraid I have no choice. We exhausted our healing powers to appease Adam's demands, pushing ourselves beyond our limits... and now we pay the price." A pause hung heavily in the air, and a sob escaped my lips as I felt her slipping away. I was to blame for her suffering. "Darling, remember, you only have one healing left within you. Use it wisely."

In my mind's eye, I could see Mariah vividly. She possessed the rare beauty of a white wolf, her fur as pure as freshly fallen snow, her eyes shimmering like emerald jewels. A light brown mark, resembling a spiral sun, adorned her forehead. A matching mark graced my left shoulder blade, fading with each use of my healing abilities. It symbolized our gift, our burden. Mariah's mark was nearly gone, just like her presence within me.

Whispering through my tears, I confessed, "I love you. Please, don't leave..."

"Take care of yourself," her fading voice murmured.

And just like that, she vanished from my being. My sobs intensified, my heart shattered into a million pieces, and a suffocating sense of loneliness engulfed me. This was my doing. I had caused this tragedy, sacrificing my wolf to bring happiness to the man I loved. But I was incapable of even that. I was never the one he desired.

The image from yesterday at the hospital replayed in my mind - my husband, his back turned to me, locked in a passionate embrace with Lillian, a woman I had vowed to aid when we exchanged vows. Lillian, a lifelong friend of his. It became painfully clear that their connection went beyond mere friendship. I didn't want to believe it, but the evidence was undeniable. They were kissing, lost in each other's presence. Their fervor eclipsed anything he had ever shown me. Lillian's hands even ventured into forbidden territory...

A wave of nausea washed over me. I wasn't just sickened by them, but also by myself.

How had I allowed myself to be ensnared in this web of deceit? Love had blinded me, and now I was paying the ultimate price - the loss of my wolf, my dignity, and my powers. I had failed the moon goddess, betraying her trust. Forgiving myself seemed an impossible feat.

The only way I could win Adam's affections was if I agreed to heal Lillian. He made it clear that if I performed this favor, he would marry me. I foolishly believed that once we were wed, I could somehow make him fall in love with me. I envisioned a blissful life together, filled with love and happiness.

But I was wrong.

A fit of coughs wracked my body, and I glimpsed blood staining my trembling fingers. My chest throbbed, each breath becoming a struggle. Exhaustion consumed me; I couldn't recall the last time sleep graced my weary eyes. As I stared at my reflection in the mirror, the evidence of my deteriorating state was impossible to ignore. Dark circles marred the hazel depths of my eyes. I had become alarmingly thin, a mere shadow of my former self. Perhaps even thinner than I had been just months ago. It seemed as though I was wasting away, my once vibrant brown locks now lifeless and limp, cascading listlessly over my shoulders.

Normally, a wolf's fur mirrored the color of their human hair, but mine was an exception.

It was a consequence of the power my wolf possessed - the extraordinary gift of healing. As one of the six members of my clan bestowed with extraordinary abilities by the moon goddess, I stood apart as the sole she-wolf following the passing of my mother years ago. Amongst us, my father possessed the power to charge and revitalize our gifts. Without his presence, utilizing our abilities excessively would prove detrimental to both ourselves and our wolves. I, alas, served as living proof of this truth. It had been three long years since I last laid eyes upon him, three years since he had replenished and recharged my powers. Now, I feared it may be too late.

I had never divulged the origins of my powers to Adam, nor had I shared anything about my family. Truthfully, he wouldn't have cared even if I had. His only concern lay in me saving Lillian's life.

"I can't bear it any longer," I murmured to myself, tearing my gaze away from the mirror. "I just want it all to end."

A small post-it note caught my attention, attached to the door of my separate bedroom, where Adam slept. Otto, his beta, must have left it there.

Reading the note, it simply stated: Hospital for healing therapy at 2 pm.

An involuntary shudder ran through me at the thought of inflicting harm upon myself to heal Lillian. This would mark the fifth time this month. Initially, I had not minded it, finding solace in the ability to assist Lillian. She suffered from a rare wolf disease that caused her to lose vital proteins in her blood, resulting in the gradual dysfunction of her organs. Her frailty pained me deeply. The moon goddess had gifted me these powers to aid those within our kingdom.

Yet, despite three years of effort, Lillian showed no signs of improvement. If anything, her condition worsened. It made no sense. It should have worked from the very first attempt.

In a fit of frustration, I crumpled the post-it note into a tight ball and hurled it across the room. The memory of Lillian and Adam's passionate kiss lingered in my mind, a stark contrast to the lack of affection between us. Adam, with his handsome yet stern face, had never kissed me with the same intensity. His smiles were always forced, lacking genuine sincerity. It was clear that our marriage was devoid of love.

But now, I had reached a breaking point. I knew what I wanted, what I needed. I couldn't remain trapped in this loveless union any longer. The decision was made. "I want a divorce," I mentally conveyed to Adam, knowing he was already at the hospital with Lillian, waiting for me to offer my healing powers once again.

To my dismay, he treated my request as a joke. "Anna, we don't have time for this," he muttered through our mental connection. "We're waiting on you at the hospital."

I stood my ground, my voice firm. "I'm serious, Adam."

"We had a deal," he hissed. "I marry you, and you heal Lillian."

"It's been three long years," I whispered, struggling to keep the pain and sorrow from seeping into my words. "Let's put an end to this today."

The thought of giving any more of myself to heal that woman sickened me. She was not getting better; she was merely draining me. It was as if she reveled in my suffering.

My fingers grazed the mark on the back of my neck, a reminder of the night he claimed me as his own, his wolf's teeth leaving their indelible imprint. But as much as I belonged to him, he was never truly mine.

There was only one person who could rid me of this mark, and I knew exactly where to find them. "We'll talk when you get here," I informed Adam.

"There's nothing more to discuss," he retorted. "I will heal her one last time. But only if you grant me this divorce."

"Anna, you don't—" he began, but I cut him off.

"I mean it, Adam. Divorce me today, or she dies."

#Chapter 2

I severed the mindlink, tears cascading down my face as I cradled my head in my trembling hands. How did I deserve such cruel treatment from the man I loved with every fiber of my being? From the very moment he saved my life, our destinies intertwined. I knew deep within my soul that he was the one I wanted to spend forever with, even if he didn't share the same sentiment. Foolishly, I believed I could change his heart.

But now, I felt nothing but foolishness myself.

Using the back of my sleeve to wipe away the tears, I reached for the pen resting on my nightstand. The divorce papers lay before me, their weight heavy with the weight of shattered dreams. I stared at them for what felt like an eternity, my resolve wavering before finally signing my name.

With a heavy heart, I made my way to the hospital room. Adam sat protectively beside Lillian, as he always did. They were engrossed in each other, whispering and sharing laughter. When I entered, they seemed oblivious to my presence, lost in their own world.

Clearing my throat, I sought to assert myself in their midst.

I fought against the allure of his handsome features, determined to stay focused on what truly mattered, on what I needed. His dark hair, tousled and swept to the side, beckoned me closer. His light brown eyes, reminiscent of silky milk chocolate, stirred emotions deep within me. And those shirts he wore, revealing not only his chiseled abs but also his intricate tattoos, a testament to his enigmatic nature.

He stood tall, towering over me, making me feel small and insignificant.

As I approached, both Adam and Lillian turned their attention towards me. Adam rose from Lillian's bedside, his gaze narrowing, his expression unreadable. Lillian, who had always been cloaked in isolation during her treatments, suddenly made me question everything. The memory of witnessing their intimate kiss yesterday resurfaced, and I couldn't help but wonder if Lillian had orchestrated my discovery.

Before Adam could utter a word, I brandished the divorce papers, waving them defiantly in the air."Adam, please sign the papers," I urged, my voice projecting a strength I didn't feel.
He growled in disbelief, his gaze lingering on the papers before him.
"I've never been more serious," I asserted, maintaining a steady tone and locking eyes with him.
"Is it money you want? I can offer you more," Adam proposed, raising an eyebrow.
To him, I was just an orphan with no family or fortune. I had painted myself as a pitiful girl who had lost her loved ones at a tender age, and he took advantage of that vulnerability. Coming from a wealthy lineage and being the Alpha of the Monroy pack, he often used his wealth and power to manipulate me, believing it was what I desired.
Flipping through the divorce papers, I pointed to the top line that read: Divorce Agreement.
"This states that I want nothing from you or this marriage. The details are explained further down," I informed him.
"I'm so sorry..." a soft voice emerged from the hospital bed. We both turned to see Lillian, tears staining her eyes, gazing up at Adam. "This is all my fault, Adam. I didn't anticipate Anna caring so deeply about these treatments."
"This has nothing to do with you," Adam comforted her, reaching for her hand and gently squeezing it. Her freckled nose turned red as she blushed beneath his touch.
She held onto his hand, biting her lower lip lightly. Tears streamed down her face, smudging her delicate makeup.
"No," she whispered, glancing over at me. "It's my fault. She blames me for disrupting your life.Anna's lack of desire to heal me is understandable. I no longer want her help either. My only wish now is for both of them to find happiness, even if it means sacrificing my own life. As her words reached my ears, a flush of embarrassment spread across my face. She had a way of manipulating him, knowing exactly what strings to pull to make me feel guilty in front of him. But when we were alone, she revealed her true feelings for me. For three long years, I had bent over backwards for both of them, but I refused to let her manipulate me any longer. I wouldn't allow them to have the upper hand in deciding my fate.

With a calm demeanor, I made my decision known to her. "I will heal you one last time," I declared, "and then I will leave."

A loud sob escaped her lips as she buried her face in Adam's arm. I ignored her theatrics and turned my attention back to Adam, who seemed more concerned for her well-being than the fact that I was leaving.

"Sign the papers, Adam," I repeated, my voice steady.

He straightened his posture, his strength and arrogance evident. I knew he wouldn't deny my request. He reached for the papers, signing them with an emotionless expression before handing them back to me.

Lillian wiped away her tears, her gaze shifting between Adam and me. "So... your marriage is over?" she asked, breaking through the heavy silence that enveloped us.

I looked up at Adam, locking eyes with him. His face remained blank, unaffected by the weight of my sacrifice. I had given everything for him, and then some. I would have given him even more, but he couldn't even spare me a second thought. This marriage had cost me everything, and he didn't even realize the extent of the pain he had caused me.

There was no need for anyone to prompt me to use my powers to heal Lillian one final time. Deep down, I knew she probably didn't even need it. I had done enough for her. Her weakness was likely just a ploy to gain Adam's attention, and it was working.Adam's love for her was so immense that he was willing to disregard my well-being in favor of hers. But it was all over now, and I would never have to endure such pain again. I fought to control my breathing, refusing to collapse even as the last remnants of my strength dwindled away. The mark of the moon goddess had burned on my chest before vanishing, leaving me in a worse state than Lillian, who lay peacefully in her bed, blissfully unaware of my loss.

Summoning every ounce of composure, I announced to Adam, "I'll be leaving the Monroy pack as soon as possible." My voice wavered slightly, betraying the emotional upheaval within me. Stepping back towards the door, I knew I couldn't remain there any longer. It was only a matter of time before I succumbed to unconsciousness, and I refused to let them witness my weakness. I had obtained what I needed, and now it was time for me to depart.

"Daddy..." I mindlinked my father and three of my older brothers, grateful for the support of the hallway wall that kept me from crumbling to the ground. It had been three long years since I had spoken to them, cut off from my previous life. I braced myself for their disappointment and scolding.

"Bianca? What's wrong?" My father's voice, surprisingly gentle yet tinged with his inherent authority, resonated in my mind.

"Long time no hear, baby sis," came Austin's voice, my second oldest brother, through the mindlink.

"What's going on?" Xander, my youngest older brother, spoke suspiciously, his concern evident in his tone.

Tears streamed down my face, and I bit down hard on my lip to stifle the sobs threatening to escape. The comforting sound of their voices overwhelmed me with emotions. "It's been three years. Time has run out, and I've failed. I'm now divorced, just as I promised."

There was a brief silence as they absorbed the weight of my words.

"Return home to the palace," my father commanded, his voice leaving no room for argument.

#Chapter 3

The majority of my brothers inherited our father's deep blue eyes and strong physique, not to mention their remarkable intellect. At 25 years old, Austin was renowned as the kingdom's finest doctoral researcher. Endowed with the extraordinary gift of diagnosis by the moon goddess herself, he possessed the ability to discern anyone's ailments with a single touch. His hair, like our father's, was jet black, though he kept it stylishly short and tousled. Whenever deep in thought, he had a habit of running his fingers through his unruly locks.

Xander, on the other hand, was equally brilliant but preferred the seclusion of an office and the monotony of paperwork. At just 22 years old, his gift from the moon goddess was more of a burden than a blessing. By touching others, he could absorb their pain, a power he often utilized to assist Austin in his research. However, Xander longed for a profession that didn't necessitate constant physical contact. As the CEO of a prominent company, he opted for a more polished appearance, with his dark hair expertly gelled and kept short.

My youngest brother, Maverick, bore a stronger resemblance to both me and our mother. At only 17 years old, he possessed one of my favorite powers: the power of tranquility. He emitted a calming aura that instantly alleviated anxiety and stress in those around him. Still waiting to meet his wolf companion, Maverick's abilities were yet to reach their full potential. Despite his youthful exuberance, he displayed a remarkable level of intelligence. With his light brown hair and hazel eyes mirroring my own, he maintained a shaggy, untamed hairstyle.

As I neared the palace, my body began to falter, threatening to give way beneath me. Just in time, my father enveloped me in his strong embrace, providing the support I desperately needed. Leaning against him, tears streamed down my face, a torrent of emotions washing over me."I should have heeded your advice, all of you," I murmured, my words barely audible. My voice trembled with regret as I spoke to him, the man who had always been there for me. "He took so much from me. I couldn't make him see the love I had to offer, the love that was within me."

"It's alright, my princess," my father consoled me, his arms enveloping me in a comforting embrace. "You're back home now. That's what truly matters. You are safe, and we can restore everything to how it once was."

Those words, meant to bring solace, only added to my apprehension. I didn't desire a return to the way things were. I yearned for something different, something more.

"And where is Finnian?" I inquired, still clinging onto my father. It felt reassuring to be held by him once again. His presence brought a sense of security, though I knew it couldn't heal me entirely, not in such a short span of time.

Finnian, our eldest brother at twenty-nine, stood as tall as our father, his hair flowing freely like a mirrored image. They could easily be mistaken for twins, save for the markings adorning Finnian's body – the distinctive swirls of a gamma warrior. Dark blue waves etched across his back, spanning his shoulders, climbing up his neck, and converging at his forehead like a regal crown. He possessed the gift of strength, bestowed upon him to safeguard our kingdom, and he wielded it dutifully as the leader of the gamma warriors.

"Rumors of rogue activity near the northern borders prompted me to send him and a group of men to patrol the area. He's been away for the entire month, but he's expected to return this week," my father explained, his embrace tightening around me. "We are overjoyed to have you back home, my dear..."

My father and brothers had never taken a liking to Adam from the start. He was an arrogant man, someone they couldn't trust. Yet, due to his successful pack, they often engaged in business with him, unbeknownst to Adam that they were my family. I had expressed my love for him to my father, my desire to become his mate, even if he wasn't my destined one. But my father vehemently refused to grant his blessing. He insisted that I wait for my fated mate to appear.

I struck a deal with my father: I would conceal my true identity and marry Adam. If, after three years, I failed to make him love me for who I truly am, then I would be allowed to divorce him and return home. My father agreed to these terms, but only on the condition that I kept my word.My father's hands firmly gripped my shoulders, his gaze penetrating into the depths of my soul. With a gentle sweep, he brushed aside a strand of hair to reveal the mark that Adam had left on me. Only the Alpha King possessed the power to erase such a mark.

Fortunate for me, the Alpha King happened to be my father.

His fingers pressed against the mark, a warning of the impending sensation. A surge of electricity coursed through my veins, causing me to cry out in pain. The intensity only grew, until finally, my father withdrew his touch. Adam's mark had vanished. A smirk tugged at the corners of my lips, knowing that I possessed the extraordinary gift of healing, yet restricted to using it solely for others.

We, my family, were the chosen ones, blessed by the moon goddess herself.

...

The following morning, Dahlia, my loyal handmaiden, entered my room with a tray of steaming tea. Every fiber of my being ached, making it a struggle to even lift my head in greeting.

"I brought you some hot tea, your highness," Dahlia said, placing the cup on my bedside table. "Shall I inform the driver that you will require the limo later? You mentioned collecting your belongings from Adam's home."

"Yes, please," I replied, gratitude lacing my words. "And also, let Warrior Felicity know that I would like to see her."

Dahlia nodded and departed, leaving me alone with my thoughts. The mention of Felicity stirred excitement within my chest. I knew she would be angry with me for not reaching out in three long years.

Moments later, Felicity stormed into my room, arms folded across her chest, her expression a mix of frustration and relief.

"I can't believe you didn't even bother to call!" she exclaimed, launching herself onto my bed. The sudden movement sent a jolt of pain through my body, causing me to wince.

"Felicity..." I breathed, relief washing over me at the sight of her. "It's so good to see you."

She scoffed, her disappointment evident. "I had to hear about your return from your brother! And speaking of your brother..." Her voice trailed off, her face flushed with a mixture of anger and hesitation. I narrowed my eyes, curious about what she was about to say, but it seemed she changed her mind, sighing and shaking her head instead."Never mind; there's just so much you missed. We can discuss it later," I said, my voice strained and broken, trying to conceal the pain within.

Felicity, a formidable gamma warrior, possessed the same dark blue markings as Finnian, adorning her shoulders, neck, and forehead like a regal crown. Her short, curly hair framed her face, partially veiling her beauty, while her olive skin accentuated her fierce demeanor. She had the physique of a goddess, always clad in form-fitting attire that showcased her strength. She had vowed to protect me at all costs, and it pained her that she couldn't shield me during these past years.

"I'm sorry," I murmured, my eyes welling up with tears. "I know I hurt you. I never intended to abandon you..."

She shook her head vigorously, her gaze scanning my body. "You're the one who's hurting," she said, concern lacing her voice. "You've lost so much weight. What has that monster done to you?"

"Oh, Felicity," I sobbed, her embrace providing solace amidst my anguish. "It was horrendous... unimaginable. I lost her. I lost Mariah," I wailed uncontrollably.

"Who?" she asked, her tone softening as she attempted to console me.

"Mariah," I cried. "I've lost Mariah."

...

Arriving at Adam's house later that evening, I stood outside, gazing at the place I once called home. Though merely a day had passed since I last stood here, it felt like an eternity. Inhaling sharply, I tried to steady my nerves. Every step I took sent waves of agony through my body, urging me to stop. But I knew I had to proceed; I couldn't allow Adam to lay his hands on the documents I had left behind.

Those documents contained intimate details about my life as royalty, personal revelations I wished to keep hidden as I rebuilt my shattered existence. As I approached the house, a sudden bout of dizziness overcame me, and the world began to spin.

The limo driver gasped as I collapsed to the ground.

#Chapter 4

"Just give me a moment, Eli," I replied, my voice trembling slightly.

After gathering myself, I reluctantly released my grip on Ronin's arm. A quick scan of the surroundings confirmed that Adam's car was nowhere in sight. He was either engrossed in work or at the hospital with Lillian.

I couldn't help but ponder if Adam and Lillian were on the brink of marriage. It was no secret that her brother and Adam shared a strong bond before his untimely demise. If it weren't for me, they would have tied the knot ages ago.

A bitter smile tugged at my lips. I was nothing more than a means to an end, a mere tool for healing.

Summoning every ounce of strength left within me, I made my way indoors to gather my belongings. Filling my suitcase with essentials, I snatched my documents, determined to leave this place behind.

"What the hell do you think you're doing?" Aubrey, Adam's nineteen-year-old sister, confronted me, arms folded defiantly across her chest as she leaned against the doorway.

"Leaving," I stated matter-of-factly.

"Says who?" she scoffed, her voice dripping with entitlement. "You haven't even done my laundry yet."

Aubrey was incapable of lifting a finger for herself, using me as her personal maid. I endured it all because I knew it pleased Adam.

"It says me," I retorted, brushing past her without a second glance. "Your brother and I finalized our divorce yesterday."

…

Adam walked into the house, exhaustion weighing heavily on his shoulders after spending the night at the hospital with Lillian. She had grown dependent on him, viewing him as a surrogate for her deceased brother. Ever since that tragic loss, Adam felt an unspoken duty to care for Lillian, as if she were his own sibling.

Lillian's brother had given him so much, and in return, Adam felt compelled to be there for her.

"Is it true? You really divorced that woman?" Aubrey bombarded him the moment he stepped through the door.

Silence hung in the air, Adam too fatigued to offer a response. His mind was consumed with thoughts of Lillian and the responsibility he held towards her well-being.

"You've lost your damn mind," his inner wolf, Enzo, growled with frustration. "I can't fathom how you could forgive that woman for forcing herself upon you, nearly crossing boundaries that should never have been breached."Enzo's frustration simmered beneath the surface as he grumbled, attempting to soothe the restless wolf within. The memory of their recent kiss twisted his expression into a grimace. Pushing Lillian away had been an instinctual reaction. After all, she was like a sister to him. Who in their right mind would lust after a sibling?

To Enzo, Lillian was no different than Aubrey. They were family, nothing more. But when he saw her tear-stained face after Anna's departure, he couldn't help but feel compelled to stay and offer solace. Lillian missed her brother, and Enzo couldn't blame her. Adam, exhausted from sleepless nights, was in no mood for Aubrey's antics either.

"The pack will lose respect once they find out about your divorce. You're the Alpha, for crying out loud! Now you're an Alpha without a Luna," Aubrey admonished, her voice tinged with concern.

Adam was well aware of this fact. Divorce was inconceivable in his mind until Anna arrived at the hospital, papers in hand, demanding his signature. It felt as if the ground had been knocked out from under him. When they first met, Anna was nothing more than a lone rogue, on the brink of drowning in a nearby lake. He had saved her life, bringing her back to the Monroy pack's hospital. When asked about her family, she claimed to be alone.

The realization that she would be alone once more filled him with worry.

"Hello?" Aubrey waved her hands in front of Adam's face, jolting him back to the present moment. "I asked if it's true."

"It's none of your business," he finally replied, striding past her and towards the stairs.

"She was here earlier. What if she stole things, Adam?" Aubrey scowled.

Adam paused, his gaze darkening as he turned to his sister. "Anna was here?!"

"She came to pack her suitcase," Aubrey explained. "She's poor, Adam. She might have stolen things to pawn them for money."

Rolling his eyes, Adam averted his gaze from her. But the unsettling turmoil in his stomach, mirrored by Enzo's curiosity and concern, refused to dissipate."Seriously, how does she expect to afford that fancy limo she rolled up in?" Aubrey yelled from downstairs. "It was waiting for her when she arrived!"

"You're talking nonsense, Aubrey," he grumbled, reaching his room and slamming the door shut behind him.

As he sat alone in his room, thoughts of Anna returning to her life as a rogue consumed him. What if something happened to her and he couldn't be there to protect her? As the Alpha, he had made a vow to keep her safe the day she became his luna.

He tried to sense her whereabouts, but it proved difficult to pinpoint her location. Usually, when one wolf marks another, they have an instinctive sense of where they are and can feel when danger looms. But Adam felt nothing, which only heightened his worry. It made him fear that something had happened to her.

"Perhaps she managed to remove the mark," Enzo suggested.

"Impossible," Adam retorted. "Only the Alpha King has the power to erase a wolf's mark. How could Anna, a rogue, possibly convince the King to do that for her?"

"Her mindlink is also severed."

"She's just being stubborn," Adam muttered.

There's no way she can survive without me.

...

Adam spent the next few days holed up in his office, attempting to distract himself from the pain of the divorce.

"Alpha," Otto, his beta, barged into the office without knocking, as he often did. Adam scowled at the interruption but remained silent. "You should come outside."

Adam raised an eyebrow in question and stood up from his desk. "What's going on?"

"Just come outside," Otto replied, leading Adam out of the building.

As soon as he stepped outside, he found himself surrounded by paparazzi and curious onlookers. He stood there, bewildered, as camera flashes nearly blinded him.

"Adam, is it true that a third party caused your recent divorce?" one of them immediately asked.

"What in the world are you talking about?" Adam growled. "And what are all of you doing at my workplace?"

"We're here because your ex-luna had something to say about a recent statement made about her," someone answered, and Adam furrowed his brow in confusion."What statement?" Adam's voice was laced with confusion and disbelief, his brow furrowing as he tried to comprehend the words that had just been spoken to him.

"A statement made by your sister, Aubrey," they replied, their tone tinged with curiosity. "She claimed that your divorce was not only because your ex-wife was a gold-digger, but also because she was cheating on you with another man."

Adam felt a surge of fury rising within him, his voice growing more menacing as he responded, "I fail to see how any of this is your concern."

"But your ex-wife herself made a statement, stating that a third-party she-wolf interfered in your marriage," they continued, undeterred. "Is there any truth to these claims? And if not, how much of it can we believe?"

The accusation hit Adam like a bolt of lightning, leaving him momentarily stunned. He couldn't believe that such rumors could spread so quickly, tarnishing his name and his past relationship.

"You have no idea what you're talking about," Adam growled, his anger simmering just beneath the surface. "Leave my property before I have security escort you out."

"Before you dismiss us, can you explain the footage from your home security cameras?" they pressed on, their eyes fixed on Adam. "Your ex-wife was seen getting into another man's limo. They were hugging and behaving intimately."

Adam's mind refused to accept the possibility of such betrayal. He shook his head vehemently, dismissing the allegations as nothing more than baseless lies.

"Show me this alleged statement written by my ex-wife," Adam demanded, his voice filled with determination.

Otto swiftly retrieved the document on his phone, presenting the screen to Adam. As he read the words penned by Anna, a wave of shock washed over him.

Every word she had written was true.

Adam's voice was barely a whisper as he uttered, "Everything they're saying... it's all true."

The weight of Anna's confession bore down on him, shattering his illusions and leaving him questioning everything he thought he knew.

When did she get a driver? Who was this other man she had found so quickly? And why was she not feeling well?

The answers to these questions eluded Adam, leaving him adrift in a sea of uncertainty and betrayal.

#Chapter 5

The grand celebrity ball loomed on the horizon, an annual affair hosted by the royal family at their opulent palace. Adam and Aubrey frequented the event, but Anna had never accompanied him. The mere arrival of the ball seemed to cast a shadow on her, always rendering her sickly.

Adam hesitated about bringing Lillian as his date. He doubted whether she could endure the demands of such an extravagant gathering in her weakened state. Yet, she persisted with unwavering determination.

"You can't attend the party alone, Adam," Lillian whined, her eyes lifting to meet his with a small frown. "My brother would have wanted you to take me."

Her mention of her late brother tugged at his heart, and deep down, he knew she was right. With a reluctant sigh, he reluctantly agreed.

...

Lillian adorned herself in a breathtaking gown, shimmering gold fabric embracing every curve with perfection. By her side stood Adam, clad in a dark suit adorned with a matching golden tie. It had been her idea to coordinate their outfits, a ploy to appear as a couple. However, he held no romantic interest in her.

Lillian wrapped her arms around his, holding onto his strong arm tightly as her body pressed against his firm torso. The suit he wore left nothing to the imagination, revealing the undeniable strength that lay beneath. In the kingdom, only the King himself rivaled Adam's power as an Alpha.

"Everyone is staring at us," Lillian whispered, her voice barely audible over the buzz of the crowd.

It was true; numerous eyes were fixed upon them, filled with admiration and curiosity. No doubt they had caught wind of his recent divorce, and the she-wolves in attendance couldn't help but be drawn to his newfound availability.

"I believe they see us as a splendid couple," she chuckled, her words floating amidst the murmurs that echoed through the ballroom.

The room erupted with anticipation, whispers fluttering like a flock of birds taking flight. The anticipation in the air was palpable as the royals made their grand entrance. All eyes were eagerly fixed on the men who held the kingdom's destiny in their hands. Adam, aware of the presence of the Alpha King and his four sons, including the youngest at a mere seventeen, couldn't help but feel a knot forming in his stomach.

"Look, it's Prince Xander!" a voice exclaimed with delight amidst the crowd. "Oh my goddess, he's absolutely stunning."

"And it seems he brought a date tonight! She's beyond lucky," chimed in her friend, her tone filled with adoration.

"Do you think she's his mate?" someone else inquired, curiosity piqued.

"Could this be the moment when the twenty-two-year-old prince finally finds his destined mate?"

Adam's unease grew, causing him to cast a worried glance at Lillian. Ignoring her wandering gaze, he surveyed the ballroom, searching for what had captivated everyone's attention.

The Monroy pack, known for their prestigious medical facility, stood near the king's pack. Adam had engaged in business dealings with both Prince Xander and Prince Austin. Prince Austin frequently utilized the Monroy's hospital research center, while Prince Xander, as the CEO of the King's Central Bank, provided funding for the facility.

Suddenly, Prince Xander materialized at the entrance, drawing gasps from the women in the room. Lillian, standing on her tiptoes, strained to catch a glimpse of the handsome prince. It seemed that every woman in the ballroom was in awe of his presence.

Just as Adam was about to divert his attention elsewhere, his eyes locked onto something—or rather, someone. Standing beside the prince, her arm intertwined with his, was Anna.

The crowd erupted in admiration, their voices filled with awe.

"She's absolutely stunning!"

"Truly a goddess..."

"Who is she? How have we never seen such a mesmerizing she-wolf at the ball before?"

"Her beauty is simply breathtaking..."

Lillian sucked in a sharp breath, her rage and confusion palpable. Trembling at his side, she seemed on the verge of losing control. Instinctively, Adam stepped in front of her, shielding her from Anna's view in the hopes of calming her turbulent emotions.Adam stood frozen in disbelief, his body rooted to the spot as he watched Anna, the she-wolf, glide through the crowd. She was unrecognizable, transformed into a vision of elegance and allure. A crimson gown clung to her slender frame, accentuating every curve with flawless precision. Her cascading waves of chestnut hair danced with life, cascading down her back in a mesmerizing display. A ruby headband adorned her tresses, drawing attention to her radiant complexion.

Lillian, ever perceptive, broke the silence. "Did you know she was with the prince?" she inquired, her gaze fixed upon Adam.

"No," Adam replied, his voice betraying a hint of frustration. "Let's go say hello to Prince Xander."

With determination in his stride, Adam maneuvered through the bustling guests, his eyes locked on Anna. Unaware of their approach, she engaged in animated conversation with the prince, her laughter filling the air. It seemed neither of them noticed Adam and Lillian drawing nearer.

Anna's gaze finally met Adam's, and her expression shifted entirely. Confusion flickered in her eyes, widening as her body tensed. She tore her gaze away from him, whispering something to Prince Xander, who followed her line of sight. A wide grin spread across his face as Adam halted before him, bowing respectfully.

"Alpha Adam," Xander greeted, his voice exuding a polished charm. "I'm delighted you could join us this evening."

Adam remained silent, his attention fixated on Anna. "Anna," he addressed her, feigning indifference. "Haven't you been feeling well?"

A calm demeanor enveloped her as she responded, refusing to acknowledge Lillian's presence. "I fail to see how that concerns you," she replied, her gaze unwavering, locked onto his.

Adam yearned to question her further, to understand her sudden transformation. Yet, before he could utter a word, Xander interjected.

"I must attend to other guests," Xander announced, diverting Adam's attention back to him. The prince's grip tightened around Anna's arm, an action that did not escape Adam's notice."We should catch up later, though. Okay?" Adam hesitated, but he nodded anyway, his gaze fixed on Xander as he pulled Anna alongside him. Anna glanced at Adam briefly before willingly going with the prince.

"Have you been deceived, your majesty?" Lillian's voice came from beside him, her expression pained as she looked between Anna and Xander. "Having an abandoned rogue as your companion? She did the same trick to Alpha Adam as well!"

What in the world does she think she's doing? Adam thought to himself, his muscles tensing at her words.

Prince Xander paused, amusement dancing in his eyes as he raised an eyebrow. "And what about you? Everyone has a history. Are you sure I can't uncover any tricks you've played?" Xander narrowed his eyes at her. "Besides, I don't think Adam is foolish enough to be fooled by this woman."

Lillian's face drained of color, left baffled by his response.

...

Bianca

"You didn't have to say all that," I whispered to my brother as we distanced ourselves.

My heart pounded in my chest; I should have known he would be here. Xander never missed a celebrity ball, while I always feigned illness to avoid attending, fearing that my true identity would be revealed.

"It was entertaining," Xander chuckled in response. "Did you see the looks on their faces?"

A small smile tugged at my lips. I did enjoy seeing them squirm.

I glanced around, hoping to catch a glimpse of Felicity and Finnian. After I returned, Felicity had informed me that Finnian was her destined mate. I was thrilled for them and couldn't wait to witness their reunion now that Finnian had returned to the palace after a month away.

"I need to use the restroom."

Xander released my arm, and I made my way towards the back door that led to the bathrooms. Just as I was about to push through the doors, a familiar voice stopped me.

"How did you manage it? Tricking the prince into bringing you to this party?" Aubrey sneered.
